The College warmly congratulates Lobel Fellow in Classics Dr Christopher Metcalf who has been awarded the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award is conferred to internationally recognised researchers in recognition of their entire academic record to date. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation sponsors distinguished international scientists and scholars irrespective of their academic discipline or nationality and maintains an international network of academic cooperation and trust. Award-winners are invited to carry out research projects of their own choice in cooperation with specialist colleagues in Germany.

Dr Metcalf said:

The study of the ancient world feels to me like a never-ending journey of discovery. The field is so vast that no single person can hope to encompass it, and none of my research would have been possible without discussions and exchanges of ideas with others. I hope to use this award to strengthen existing links, particularly with Würzburg and Göttingen, and to create new connections with other centres of learning in Germany. My plans include editorial work on ancient literary sources as well as wider-ranging projects on mythology and religion, and in both areas I have much to learn from my colleagues. I am deeply grateful to the Humboldt Foundation for continuing to help me along this path.
