Mind the Gap: Germany in the World

Germany is caught up in a moment of unprecedented political change. What will the new German government look like? How will it reflect the new constellation of political feeling in the country and deal with the growth in support for populist parties?

The world is changing too. How will Germany position itself in relation to the political upheavals in Europe, the war in Ukraine, and the crisis in the Middle East – all in the context of a second Trump presidency?

And closer to home: what of the relationship between Germany and the UK? Brexit has changed the nature of that alliance, and cuts in Germany and to language-teaching in British schools have placed it under even more pressure. At the same time, German culture is booming in the UK: from Netflix films to art, music and literature – even German comedians. What can this popularity do to bridge the gap and help us explore our shared and divided histories? And what role can the university, the German Embassy’s innovative “Making the case for German” campaign and the College’s own Queen’s Translation Exchange play in making a better future?

Join UK Ambassador to Germany, Andrew Mitchell (Modern Languages, 1986), former Ambassador and Queen’s Honorary Fellow Sir Paul Lever (Literae Humaniores, 1962), historian and journalist John Kampfner (Modern History/Russian, 1981) and Schwarz-Taylor Professor of German Karen Leeder in a roundtable discussion to find out and have your say.
